I’m happy to say that this weekend I’m leading a portrait photography workshop at the beautiful Boyce Thompson Arboretum. I’ve been a volunteer instructor at the Arizona state park for the past few years teaching visitors about camera basics and how to visualize and capture the image. The class is a great opportunity to share the knowledge gained during my career as a photographer and to give back to the community. The funds from the class fees support the operations at BTA.

The portrait class is a whole new deal and will be a lot of fun. Paul Wolterbeek, Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s Information Specialist, has set up a few scenarios including a mock engagement portrait shoot and a pet portrait shoot. The arboretum has been a backdrop in a number of my photo shoots throughout the years. Check out these galleries of BTA shoots:

Desiree and Brent’s Wedding

Kelly and Daren Engagement Photos

I’ll teach some of the tricks I’ve learned from years of shooting assignments and weddings outdoors, especially at times when the lighting doesn’t make for the best portraits (high noon in Arizona anyone?). We’ll do a quick run through of shooting with available light, using light modifiers, and using on-camera vs. off-camera strobe. Students will have a chance to shoot along side me and ask questions throughout the class.

The class is Sunday, March 11, 8:30am-11:30am. Check with BTA for class availability as we capped the attendance at 8 students. Pre-payment of $29 is required ($20 for BTA annual members). Enroll by phone, have your credit card ready and call BTA staff at 520-689-2723.
